What Are My Skills?
Pre-Production
Have I selected an appropriate and manageable genre/sub genre/hybrid?
I think my hybrid genre (Supernatural Drama) is very appropriate and I think the production will be an enjoyable experience as well as an educated one. The fact that I already enjoy watching this genre, I think that I can manage this task very well due to having watched enough and researched existing products.
What I already know:
Mise-En-Scene- Dull lighting (portrays gritty and bleak nature).
- Close ups of characters - establishes emotion
- Low angle and High angle shots - to portray strength and weakness among characters.
- Clear shots and angles to show the differentiation between characters.
Props
- Phone
- Blood
- Religious objects (crucifix)
- Animals
- Wooden Stakes
- Books/Grimiores (for witches, other powerful beings)
- magical objects (wands)
Typical Character Traits:
- Supernatural Villain: (Predator) vampire, ghost, evil spirit, etc.
- Victim: usually human
- Hero: sometime human, sometimes have abilities.
- Detective/Police: usually human, depends on the narrative.
Codes and Conventions:
- Realistic props, characters and settings.
- Dramatic music in the background to distinguish an emotional scene.
TV Examples:
- True Blood - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbtq4ZzRaKI
- Salem
- Vampire Diaries - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBYlPWf1LVs
- American Horror Story
- Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Usually in gritty dramas, the victims clothes are worn out, torn and dirty hand me downs, however sometimes they can be just like you and me and be walking in casual everyday clothes. This is what is so captivating, the ambiguity of who could be the next victim.
He is being chased through the woods by blood-thirsty vampires, ya know .
But he is from this time period even though they will be ripped and muddy, he'll be in jeans, a t-shirt and probably trainers, etc.
What I Will Be Using In my Production
However the blood stained clothes is exactly how I imagined my young male victim to be portrayed. He is being chased through the woods by blood-thirsty vampires, ya know .
But he is from this time period even though they will be ripped and muddy, he'll be in jeans, a t-shirt and probably trainers, etc.
For our two vampires I have decided they are both (originally) from the Georgian Period. Both Alistair (the older vamp) and Victoria (the younger one) are subtly holding onto time periods which are different from each other but also neither of the current time in which the television series is set.
Alistair, is stuck in the alternative 80's grunge look, wearing a lot of dull brown and black colours, whereas Victoria is holding onto the more further past, and wears a sort of corsets with her outfits to mimic her being from the Georgian Period.
Most vampires are known for their quick adaptability however our two mystical beasts will be slightly more obvious, emphasizing their detachment from humanity.

What does my target audience research tell me about my planning?
My research comes down to that people (mainly the everyday, working-class communities such as yourself and I) watch television to sometimes escape from the real world, and to associate and identify with the characters they see on screen. However they choose shows such as Eastenders and Hollyoaks to familiarize themselves with the 'Kitchen Sink' element of the drama (a style of social realism such as; angry young men, drinking in grimy pubs, exploring controversial, social and political issues ranging from abortions to homelessness). They also choose fantastical television shows like The Vampire Diaries and Buffy. This shows that people will always, no matter what, watch a drama that relates to family issues and, again, controversial, social and political issues.
Crime dramas are slightly different because there's always a mystery of a death going on as the main focus of the show, however behind the scenes there's elements of perhaps a detective returning home to his cheating wife. Or some sort of other on goings that are more real/even relatable to the audience.
Take Gotham for example.
Jim Gordon is a policeman who left his crazy ex-fiance for another woman (whom he now loves) and so his ex went all cray-cray, dressed up like a bride and kidnapped them both.
Surely we can all relate? Okay perhaps not all of us can relate quite like that 😂 but we've all had bad relationships and experience them coming back or trying to move on but can't because of those people re-occuring.
Period dramas' audience however are more for the older generations simply due to, as well as audiences relating to characters and family quarrels, viewers of this particular sub-genre gain a sense of nostalgia also from these shows. Aka; Downton Abbey, The Crown, etc.
All in all I think I will not be including Period drama to my project. Though it might be interesting to show a flashback or like a 'previously on Lost' kinda vibe, but I don't have enough time given to me I don't think, in order to fit in an extra scene. Not to mention the fact that I'm actually only allowed 3 scenes all together anyway 😂.
How will I schedule the writing/filming/editing/construction of these tasks?
I intend to create and upload a very detailed but very clear representation of my schedule for this project. It will be uploaded very shortly after this post and I hope that it will enable me to stay focused and dedicated to the task as well as keep me up to date with all you guys, my beloved ZOMBAES!!! See what I did there 😉.
Anyways, stay tuned my little blood suckers!
